Code Cemetery
An old abandoned cemetery on the Code Plantation located in Clarendon County, on the site of the old Santee River Road about 21 miles southeast of Manning, about nine miles east of Summerton. At the time of the inventory, it was not fenced and contained no grave markers. Information gathered during the inventory, June 6 1939, indicated that some 50 years earlier (about 1889) there were wooden hand markers and the graves were plainly visible. The cemetery investigators were not able to determine the names of any individuals buried in the cemetery. Today the cemetery is owned by the Authority near the waters of the Santee Reservoir, Lake Marion.


Code cemetery #1 is owned by the Prudential Insurance Co.


Colcolough Cemetery
This cemetery is located in Clarendon County, S.C., about 10 miles east of Summerton and one half mile in front of the old Santee Methodist Church (A.M.E.). The inventory report, dated March 8 1939, states "unable to find any marking that would lead to believe that this cemetery would be disturbed by the Project."


The Cuddo Cemetery
This cemetery was located in Clarendon County about 16 miles south of Manning, about 12 miles south east of Summerton and about two miles south of the old Santee River Road. At the time of the inventory the area was unfenced and overgrown with weeds and brush. There were no markers, nor anything to indicate its being a cemetery. The cemetery had not been used for a great many years. It was estimated that the area contained about 150 graves. The names of 49 individuals believed to have been buried in this cemetery were obtained by personal interview with local residents.

Fort Watson Indian Mounds on Scott's Lake (Indian)
This abandoned Indian Burial ground was located around old Fort Watson, on Scott's Lake, Clarendon County, S. C. At the time of the inventory, October 31 1940, the burial ground was on the property owned by R. A. Smythe et al and the area was reported to be overgrown and neglected. It was reported that "some of the mounds seem to have been dug into for relics.

This burial ground was left undisturbed as it appeared there would be no effect on the graves from the water.


Frierson Cemetery #96
This old abandoned cemetery was located in Clarendon County S. C. about 15 miles southwest of Greeleyville, S. C. and about 12 miles south of Manning. The area was about five or six hundred yards west of Frierson Cemetery # 95 on Frierson Plantation (Wyboo Wiboo) owned by C.E. Smith. At the time of the inventory, October 31 1940, the report states that "it is overgrown with trees and brush, and there is no fence nor any markers of any kind." Workers were unable to determine the names of any one buried in this cemetery. It was decided to leave the cemetery undisturbed. Today the area is covered by the waters of the Santee Reservoir, Lake Marion.


Frierson "Unknown" Cemetery # 97
This cemetery was located in Clarendon, S.C., about 15 miles southwest of Greeleyville and about 12 miles south of Manning. The area was about 250 yards west of Frierson Cemetery # 96 on Frierson Plantation (Wyboo or Wiboo) owned by C. E. Smith. At the time of the inventory, October 31, 1940, the report states that Vester Leavy of Summerton, S.C. had been told "that two negroes came to Frierson Plantation sick and soon died and were buried there. No one knew who they were". This was back in slavery times, but he can remember when the two graves were plain and marked with wooden markers. The area was overgrown in trees and brush. There was no fence, marker or anything to indicate its being a cemetery. Investigators were unable to determine the names of the two individuals buried in the cemetery. With the area being below the 60 foot contour, it was decided to leave the cemetery undisturbed.


Goshen II Plantation Cemetery
This Clarendon County S.C. was located about one mile south of the river road, about 15 miles southeast of Manning, and about 12 miles southeast of Summerton. At the time of the inventory, the cemetery was on the property of A. J. Plowden. It was unfenced, unmarked, and very much neglected, being overgrown with trees and brush. Through personal interviews with local residents, the cemetery investigators were able to learn the names of 40 individuals believed to have been buried there.

When it was determined that this cemetery would be in danger of wave erosion from the Santee Reservoir, Lake Marion, 77 graves were moved to property of the Authority located about 11 miles south of Manning.


Lawson Cemetery
This cemetery is located about one and a half miles south of St Paul and about 26 miles southeast of Sumter. There were no markers and the number of graves it contained was unknown. At the time of the inventory, the cemetery was on the property owned by Robert Smythe. The cemetery was overgrown with trees and brush and had been abandoned for over 40 years. There were no markers and the number of graves it contained is unknown. Through personal interveiw with local residents, cemetery investigators learned the names of seven individuals believed to have been buried there.

Though the cemetery was well out of area of the Santee reservoir, Lake Marion, it was the opinion of the Director of the Cemetery Department that "it could be affected by water" thus it would be observed for possible seepage.


Nelson Cemetery
This abandoned cemetery was located in Clarendon County, S. C. about two miles south of Zion Church, 16 miles south of Manning, and about 12 miles southeast of Summerton. At the time of the inventory, May 19 1939, the cemetery was on the property owned by the estate of S. W. Nelson. There were no grave markers and the cemetery was unfenced and overgrown with trees and brush. One person interviewed said he could remember when the graves were marked with wooden markers and that it was known as the Nelson Burying ground. Cemetery investigators were unable to determine the names of any individuals believed to be buried there. 93 graves were moved to property of the Authority located about 11 miles south of Manning.


Old Jeruselum Cemetery
This cemetery was located in Clarendon County, S. C. on property of the Old Jeruselam Church. It was on the old Santee River Road, about 12 miles south of Manning and about 14 miles southeast of Summerton. At the time of the inventory, April 16 1941, the cemetery was unfenced, and overgrown with trees and brush, and very much neglected. It contained approximately 150 graves, two of which were marked. Through personal interview with local residents, cemetery investigators learned the names of 64 individuals believed to have been buried there.

Though the cemetery was located near the severance line, it was determined to leave the graves and markers undisturbed. It was the opinion of the Director of the cemetery Department that while the cemetery was very near the water of the Santee Reservoir, Lake Marion, the land was high enough so that there would be no effect from the water.


Owens no 1 Cemetery
This cemetery is located in Clarendon County, S.C. on the old Owens Plantation about 20 miles south west of Manning and five miles southeast of St. Paul. At the time of the inventory, August 24, 1939, the property was owned by G. T. Floyd. It was an old abandoned burying ground at that time, there were four unmarked graves. The area is adjoining the severance line and has been unaffected by the water of the Santee Reservoir, Lake Marion.


Owens no 2 Cemetery
This Cemetery is located in Clarendon County, S.C. on the old Owens Plantation about 20 miles southwest of Manning and five miles southeast of St Paul. At the time of the inventory, August 24, 1939, the property was owned by G.T. Floyd. It was an old abandoned burying ground at that time. The cemetery contains an unknown number of unmarked graves. The area is near the severance line and has been unaffected by the water of the Santee Reservoir, Lake Marion.


Sab Cemetery
This cemetery is located in Clarendon County, S.C. about six miles south east of Summerton and five miles east of St Paul. At the time of the inventory, August 14 1939, the property was owned by the McKnights. The area was unfenced and overgrown with trees and brush. There were three grave markers and an unknown number of unmarked graves.
